Take measurements

A shoe size describes one number. Your foot has about a dozen that matter.

Standard lasts are averaged from population data, then graded up and down in fixed increments. Length scales, but width, girth, instep height and heel volume scale with it whether or not yours do. That is why a shoe can be the right length and still be wrong: too tight across the joints, too loose at the heel, too shallow over the instep. Building the last from your own geometry removes the averaging step. Nothing about the shoe has to be a compromise between your foot and someone else's.

Wide feet

In a stock shoe

Retail width grading is coarse and inconsistent. Most brands offer one width, a few offer two, and the extra width usually arrives bundled with extra length you do not need. So you size up, the heel loosens, the ball of your foot sits behind the flex point of the shoe, and the shoe creases in the wrong place from the first wear.

Width and girth are measured directly at the joints, then the last is cut to those numbers at your actual length. The flex point lands where your foot actually bends. No sizing up to buy room, no trading heel fit for forefoot fit.

Two feet that are not the same size

In a stock shoe

Most people have a measurable difference between left and right, and a meaningful minority differ by half a size or more. A pair of retail shoes offers one size for both, so one foot fits and the other negotiates. Usually the smaller foot slips and the larger one is cramped.

What we change

Each foot gets its own last. Left and right are built to their own length, width, girth and heel volume. The pair matches on the outside and differs on the inside, which is the only place it matters.

Bunions and prominent joints

In a stock shoe

A bunion moves the widest point of the foot forward and outward, into the exact spot where a stock upper is seamed and stiffened. The result is a concentrated pressure point that rubs, inflames and makes the whole shoe feel like a mistake, even when the length is right.

What we change

The last is shaped around the prominence rather than against it, and we place the pattern so no seam or stiffener sits over the joint. Softer, unlined or leather-lined uppers give the material somewhere to go instead of pressing back.

High instep, or a foot with volume

In a stock shoe

Instep height is rarely graded at all. A high instep in a stock shoe means the laces close too early, the tongue digs in across the top of the foot, and you feel a band of pressure that no amount of breaking in resolves. Going up a size adds length rather than depth, so it does not fix it.

What we change

Instep height is a measured input, so the last carries the depth your foot needs and the lacing closes in the middle of its range rather than at the end of it. The shoe holds without clamping.

Narrow feet and low volume

In a stock shoe

The opposite problem, and the less discussed one. A foot with too much room slides forward on every step. Toes hit the front, the heel lifts out, and the friction shows up as blisters and black toenails. Lacing tighter compresses the top of the foot to fix a problem at the sides.

What we change

Width, girth and heel width are built down to your measurements, so the shoe holds the foot without being cinched. Movement inside the shoe is what causes most blistering, and the fix is fit rather than lacing pressure.

Flat arches, high arches, and long days on your feet

In a stock shoe

Arch height and arch length are separate measurements, and stock footbeds assume both. Support placed slightly too far forward or back is worse than no support at all: it loads the wrong part of the foot, and by the afternoon it reads as fatigue rather than pain, so it is easy to blame the day rather than the shoe.

What we change

We build to your measured arch height and length, and you choose the stack underneath: ground feel with thin footbeds, or a cushioned build with a cork or bio EVA midsole. Every option is zero drop and flat, so posture is not being altered by a heel lift you did not ask for.

Orthotics and prescribed insoles

In a stock shoe

An orthotic takes up volume. Dropped into a retail shoe it raises the foot, shortens the effective depth, tightens the instep and pushes the heel up out of the counter. Most people end up sizing up and living with a shoe that is too long in order to fit the device.

What we change

Send us the device dimensions, or tell us you use one, and the last is built with the volume already accounted for. The orthotic sits in a shoe designed to hold it rather than one that is being stretched to accept it. If your specialist has written specific requirements, we build to those.

Feet that change through the day

In a stock shoe

Feet swell. Standing work, heat, long flights and simply the passage of the afternoon all change the volume of a foot, and a shoe fitted at nine in the morning can be a different shoe by six in the evening. Stock shoes are fitted once, at whatever moment you happened to be in the store.

What we change

Tell us in your notes and we adjust the fit allowance and steer you toward lacing and material choices that move with you. Leather and hemp both give as they warm. A shoe with the right base geometry has room to accommodate a change in volume, rather than having spent that room already.

The inputs

What two photos actually capture.

Each foot is measured independently. There is no averaging between left and right, and no rounding to the nearest size.

  • Length Heel to longest toe, per foot. Yours are almost certainly not identical.
  • Ball width The widest point across the joints. The first thing a stock shoe gets wrong.
  • Ball girth The circumference around the joints. Width alone misses a deep or shallow forefoot.
  • Instep height How much room the shoe needs over the top of the foot before lacing pressure starts.
  • Heel width Controls slippage. A narrow heel in a graded shoe is the reason your foot lifts.
  • Arch height and length Where support has to sit, and where it must not.
  • Toe shape Which toe is longest, and how much room the box needs in front of it.
  • Asymmetry The measured difference between your two feet, kept rather than averaged away.

What we are not

We make shoes. We are not a clinic.

Custom footwear solves fit problems. It does not treat medical conditions. If you have diabetes, neuropathy, an active ulcer, a healing fracture, or a prescription orthotic written by a specialist, work with your podiatrist first and bring us what they tell you. We will build to their guidance, and we will tell you honestly if what you need is therapeutic footwear rather than what we make.

For everything short of that, which is most people, the fix is geometric rather than clinical. A last built to your measurements, room where you need it, structure where you do not.
