The phone scan is the finest instrument and the one we recommend. If you would rather work with a ruler and a sheet of paper, that road is open too, and it is the one shoemakers walked for centuries.

Print the sheet at 100 percent scale, stand on it, trace both feet, then measure the marked points with any ruler and send us the numbers. Slower and less precise than the scan, and perfectly workable. This is how shoes were measured for a few hundred years.

The inputs

What gets measured, and why it matters.

Grouped the way a lastmaker thinks about a foot. Every category is captured per foot, never averaged across the pair.

Linear

Foot length, toe length, arch length, heel to ball

Sets where the shoe bends. If the ball of your foot sits behind the flex point, the shoe fights you on every step and creases in the wrong place.

Width

Ball width, waist width, heel width

The single biggest source of retail fit failure, and the one most brands grade in two coarse steps or not at all.

Girth

Ball girth, instep girth, heel girth

Circumference, not width. Two feet can share a width and need completely different volume. This is what stops a shoe from feeling tight while measuring correct.

Height

Instep height, arch height, toe height

Decides how much room sits above the foot. Get it wrong and lacing pressure appears as a band across the top that no break in period resolves.

Shape

Toe shape, forefoot angle, arch profile

Which toe is longest, how the forefoot splays, where the arch begins and ends. This shapes the toe box and the waist of the last.

Asymmetry

Measured left against measured right

Recorded rather than corrected. A difference of half a size between feet is common, and it is why one shoe of a retail pair always feels like the wrong one.

Context

Sock thickness, usual wear, standing hours, known conditions

You tell us this in your notes. It changes the fit allowance we apply, and it is read by a person before your last is cut.

Biomechanics

Gait pattern, pronation, weight distribution, posture notes

Where you load the foot changes where the shoe wears and where support has to sit. Anything your podiatrist has told you belongs here.

From numbers to a shoe

Your measurements become a last.

A last is the solid form a shoe is built around. It is not a copy of your foot. A foot at rest and a foot mid stride are different shapes, and a shoe has to work for both, so the last adds volume in some places, holds tight in others, and allows for how the material will move once it has been worn in.

We generate one digital last per foot from your measurement file, then apply allowances by material. Leather relaxes and takes a set. Hemp gives across the weave but not along it. Wool moves in both directions. The same foot in three uppers needs three slightly different lasts, and that is applied before anything is cut.

The last is kept on file. A second pair, a different model, or a resole years from now all start from the same geometry, which means the fit you approved is the fit you keep.

The handoff

What happens after you press send.

Seven stages, each with a checkpoint where a pair can be held rather than corrected later. Timings for every stage are set out in full.

  1. 01

    Capture review

    Your scan is processed into a foot model and read by a person alongside any notes you left. Poor lighting, socks, or a foot cropped at the frame edge are caught here rather than discovered at lasting.

  2. 02

    Last generation

    One digital last per foot, built from your measurements with material allowances applied for the upper you chose.

  3. 03

    Pattern development

    The upper pattern is drawn to your last, with seam placement checked against anything you flagged, such as a bunion or a sensitive joint.

  4. 04

    Cutting

    Hides are selected and cut by hand. Vegetable tanned leather carries natural marks, so panels are placed to work around them and to match grain across the pair.

  5. 05

    Closing

    The upper is stitched, lining fitted, reinforcements placed at heel and toe.

  6. 06

    Lasting and soling

    The upper is pulled over your last and held while the leather takes the shape, then midsole and outsole are built up. This includes a mandatory rest period that cannot be shortened without losing the fit.

  7. 07

    Final check and dispatch

    Edges finished, laces fitted, the pair measured one last time against your file, then boxed.

01 Wear them

Indoors, on a clean floor, with the socks you intend to wear. Give it a few sessions before you judge, because leather takes a little time to settle.

02 Tell us where

Not just that it is off, but where. Tight across the joints, heel lifting, pressure on the instep. That sentence is what we build the correction from.

03 We adjust the last

Your digital last is changed to match, and the change is recorded against your file so it carries into every future pair.

04 We rebuild

A new pair from the corrected last, at no cost to you. Keep the original or send it back, whichever you prefer.
